    Hardware Requirements

Our recommendations to take this course:

    • A newer machine with 512 MB (or more) memory, an examination hard disk drive with your examination utilities on it and a floppy disk drive.  Access to the Internet.
      • Compaq computers are generally not suitable for examination machines.
      • Laptop are also generally not suitable for examination machines.
    • A dual boot Windows 98 and Windows 2000 (PRO) or Windows XP hard drive
      • Both a FAT and NTFS partition on the examination drive frequently help in the examination of a suspect drive.  The FAT drive is a good place to "dump files" for low level examination.
      • Windows 98 is the last Windows operating system that will allow the use of Real Mode DOS.  Real Mode DOS, by itself, will not "touch" or change the original media.
      • As an alternative, you could have a separate Windows 98 FAT file system drive and a separate Windows 2000/XP drive.
    • We provide detailed instructions on how to set up a dual boot machine that will boot to Windows 2000 (or XP) or to Windows 98 or directly to Real Mode DOS.
    • It is not possible to take this course using a Windows XP machine, unless you have a FAT partition and can boot to real Mode DOS.  As you are probably aware, USB "Thumb Drives" are FAT file system drives.  We have a boot disk and a boot CD available that will load USB drives on many, but not all, machines.  This may make completing the course without a FAT partition on your hard drive possible.
